What are the definitions of the various rater categories?

360-degree surveys categorize raters differently depending on the survey purpose. Here are definitions for the possible rater categories:

  • Immediate Boss - Person to whom you directly report
  • Superior - Person higher in the organization
  • Peer - Your colleagues, co-workers; those you work closely with
  • Direct Report - People who report routinely to you
  • Other - Others who know you well and have had a good opportunity to observe your working style
  • Observer - Employees in your organization
  • Board Member – Executive on a Board of Directors
